A former Gwent Police Officer, from Barry, has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for fracturing his wife’s back by kicking her down the stairs.

Huw Orphan, 32, a former police constable of Gwent Police, was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm and real bodily harm at Cardiff Crown Court.

He lied and refuted allegations of assaulting Amy Burley, a fellow employee of Gwent Police, at their residence in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, in 2020, asserting that he inadvertently struck her with his leg during an altercation and was acquitted of a more severe charge of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm.

He was prohibited from joining any police force following a misconduct hearing by the Gwent force, and, bizarrely as if it was a consolation, they stated he would have been terminated immediately had he not quit shortly prior.

In an impact statement read to the court, Ms Amy Burley said she had been left with frequent pain and mobility issues.

“I’m unable to sit or stand for a long period of time and I have a very poor and irregular sleep pattern,” she said.

“I was unable to perform simple activities with my children, such as playing and having fun.

“After six months of sick leave, I went off on unpaid leave which has affected me and my family financially. I’m constantly drained by the whole thing.”
