In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Gerard Fox, then 66, of Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court. Following an investigation into his digital activity, the retired logistics manager was caught with a “reprehensible” cache of over 36,000 indecent images of children and 1,414 “vile” videos of extreme pornography involving bestiality.

The investigation established that Fox “calculatingly” built a massive digital library between June 2015 and August 2018. Police Scotland launched a probe after a national online child abuse prevention agency tracked his IP address downloading “abhorrent” material. Upon raiding his home, officers seized a laptop and an external hard drive where the “vicious” haul was found “systematically” organised into folders. Of the 36,405 child abuse images discovered, nearly 3,000 were “reported” as being in the most extreme category.

Digital Predation and Sexual Deviance

The prosecution reported that Fox admitted to having a “sinister” sexual interest in animals. The extreme pornography found on his devices depicted women engaged in “reprehensible” acts with dogs, snakes, and eels. Furthermore, “critical” evidence extracted from his Skype account revealed that Fox had been “persistently” sharing “warped fantasies” with other like-minded adult males online, demonstrating a “systematic” engagement with a global network of offenders.

Depute fiscal Lisa Lann emphasised that while Fox’s wife had used the laptop for hotel bookings, the “vile” stash was exclusively accessible to and managed by Fox. The court heard that the “gravity” of the offending was compounded by the fact that the images were “easily accessible” on his hardware. Fox admitted to the charges, and Sheriff Thomas Millar noted the “serious” risk he posed to the public, particularly given the “vicious” scale of the collection.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his “appalling” crimes in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Gerard Fox was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: (Sentence was initially deferred for reports; typical outcomes for this scale of offending involve significant incarceration).
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed for life.
  • SOPO/SHPO: Prosecutors moved for a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (now SHPO in Scotland) to restrict his internet use indefinitely.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Fox is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. His history of “persistent” downloading and “calculating” digital networking with other perverts means his status remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Fox must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his residence in Stonehouse. Authorities state that he was “reported” as a danger to children, and the imposition of a SOPO was “critical” to prevent him from accessing “reprehensible” material in the future. Any breach of his registration conditions or digital restrictions will result in his immediate return to Hamilton Sheriff Court.
