In 2021, the Offender Database reported that George Metcalff, then 71, was sentenced to life in prison at the High Court in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Metcalff was convicted of the rape and murder of 46-year-old Patricia Henry, despite her body never being recovered.

The investigation established that Metcalff killed Ms Henry (also known as Patti) at her flat in Kirkwood Place, Girvan, South Ayrshire, in November 2017. Metcalff, a “vicious” predator more than 20 years her senior, had financed her move from Paisley, Renfrewshire, to Girvan just weeks prior to her disappearance, exerting “coercive control” over her.

Pattern of Violence and Disappearance

The court heard that Metcalff used a hire van in the early hours of the morning following Ms Henry’s disappearance to collect a bed frame and mattress from her home. Detectives believe this was a “manipulative” ruse to dispose of her body. Ms Henry’s daughter, Alannah, reported that her mother had sent a WhatsApp message shortly before vanishing, claiming that Metcalff had tried to kill her.

Further investigation by Police Scotland uncovered a “vile” history of offending. Metcalff was also found guilty of:

  • Rape and Assault: Convicted of raping and physically beating two other women between 1971 and 2004.
  • Attempting to Defeat the Ends of Justice: For his “systematic” efforts to hide the murder of Ms Henry.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his “abhorrent” crimes across South Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, George Metcalff was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years to be served before parole eligibility.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed for life.
  • Indefinite Restriction: Given his “dangerous” status as a serial sexual predator.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Metcalff remains managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. Judge Lord Armstrong emphasised that Metcalff had been convicted of a “series of the utmost offences.”

As of 2026, Metcalff continues to serve his 25-year minimum term. He has consistently refused to reveal the location of Patricia Henry’s remains, despite “heartfelt” pleas from her daughter and mother for closure. Police Scotland states that the case remains open in terms of recovering her body. Any eventual consideration for release will depend on his disclosure of the location of the remains and a “critical” assessment of the risk he poses to the public.
