Edward Nick Gratwick, the Mitcham Paedophile, has been convicted following a National Crime Agency investigation for planning to travel abroad to sexually attack children as young as six.
Edward Nick Gratwick, 68, of Mitcham, was arrested at Stansted Airport on 7 March 2025 while attempting to board a flight to Bucharest, Romania.
NCA officers acquired intelligence concerning a UK national who had participated in online discussions with another individual, in which they contemplated organising a meeting to sexually exploit a nine-year-old girl. The pair also planned to administer GHB to the girl to guarantee she would have no memory of the incidents.
Edward Nick Gratwick, a UK national, was identified, leading officials to promptly coordinate his arrest upon discovering his impending exit from the country. International law enforcement agents identified and detained the additional culprit while safeguarding three children.
Following Edward Nick Gratwick’s arrest, law officers executed a search of his apartment, leading to the seizure of multiple electronic devices. Officers scrutinised thousands of messages on his phone and concluded that he was employing encrypted applications—such as Teleguard, aTox, and Session—to communicate online with offenders in the UK, Europe, and beyond. They also discovered that he had been distributing highly explicit sexual conversations and indecent images of children.
Edward Nick Gratwick participated in conversations regarding child sexual abuse with individuals he believed had access to females between the ages of six and ten. He would explicitly outline his intentions to sexually exploit them and, in some instances, suggested compensating them with varying sums of money as payment.
Edward Gratwick repeatedly referenced incapacitating his potential victims to guarantee their amnesia, explicitly naming rohypnol and GHB, which he described in his correspondence as “a good rape drug.” During the officers’ search of his residence, they found bottles in his kitchen refrigerator that were analysed and identified as Gamma Butyrolactone (GBL), categorised as a Class B narcotic.
During the inspection of his devices, investigators uncovered images of these bottles, which he had emailed to a correspondent, declaring, “I will provide ample GHB for your enjoyment in my absence.”
In certain exchanges, Edward Nick Gratwick overtly identified himself as a ‘pimp’, offering a service to other paedophiles. In his role, he notified other internet users that he would obtain a 25% commission from the payment for his participation in the facilitation of the sexual exploitation of minors.
Investigators obtained a reservation for an Airbnb in Bucharest from March 7 to 9, 2025, discovered within communication records between Edward Nick Gratwick and an individual in Romania, who asserted she was the mother of a 10-year-old daughter. The negotiations took place between February and March 2025 and encompassed detailed descriptions of the sexual abuse Edward Nick Gratwick intended to commit upon his arrival in Bucharest.
The chat records revealed that the person speaking with Edward Nick Gratwick voiced concerns about the monitoring of their home, to which Edward Nick Gratwick responded, “Do you have a timer-operated plug?” A programmable device for controlling the activation and deactivation of a light. He also discussed with the individual a specific top he wished the young girl to wear, saying, ‘[she] will look superb in the sleeveless top’.
Following Edward Nick Gratwick’s detention at the airport, investigators examined his travel bag and discovered various items, including a timer-operated plug and a child’s sleeveless shirt.
Authorities discovered around 1,300 indecent photos of children (IIOC) on his devices, including 632 category A images, the most severe categorisation. He shared numerous photographs with his acquaintances and, during one discussion, said that the images he had were ‘not extremely extensive but a diverse collection.’
On 9 March 2025, Edward Nick Gratwick was charged with 11 counts of child sexual assault, comprising 10 allegations of facilitating child sex offences, including the rape of a child under 13, and was thereafter held in custody. He was then indicted on more charges during his trial.
On 10 October, Edward Nick Gratwick was found guilty on 38 charges, including arranging or attempting to orchestrate a child sex offence, attempting to engage in sexual dialogue with a child, distributing indecent images of minors, and possessing indecent photographs of minors. He is slated for sentencing on 28 November at Guildford Crown Court.
