In 2019, the Offender Database reported that David Watkin Bundock, then 74, of Cardiff, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison at Swansea Crown Court. Bundock, a retired head teacher who had previously been awarded an MBE for services to education, was convicted of a “serious” and “vile” campaign of child sexual abuse. The investigation by South Wales Police revealed that Bundock had utilised messenger apps to “depravedly” groom young boys and possess “sickening” indecent images of children.
The court heard horrendous details of Bundock’s “vicious” behaviour, which took place between October 2017 and January 2019. He first came to the attention of officers after his mobile number was found on the device of another man arrested for distributing indecent images. The prosecution emphasised that the two men had used WhatsApp to discuss children in “graphic and depraved terms.” When arrested, Bundock was found to have used the Kik messenger app to tell a 14-year-old boy that he “couldn’t wait to be naked with him.”
Bundock was also the subject of a “serious” sting by a group that created the persona of a 15-year-old boy on a dating app. During the exchange, Bundock “vilely” referenced his former profession, stating, “It would have been nice to have you in my class,” before attempting to meet the “boy” at a car park in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire. Despite being confronted and arrested in July 2018, Bundock “callously” continued his “vicious” behaviour, committing a further grooming offence while on bail.
During the sentencing, Judge Keith Thomas emphasised that Bundock had committed “appalling offences” in secret, contradicting the moral values he had previously espoused during his long career in Llandysul, Ceredigion. The court reported that although the offences were not related to his time as a head teacher, his “vile” actions represented a “serious” breach of the trust placed in him by the public and his profession.
As a result of his convictions for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, grooming, and possession of indecent images, David Watkin Bundock was jailed for over two years. He was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, barred from working with children, and made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). He is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by South Wales Police, ensuring his behaviour and digital activity in Cardiff and across Wales are strictly monitored. Any further “vile” actions will result in his immediate arrest and return to prison.
