In 2026, the Offender Database reported that David Bayliss, then 48, of Antimony Crescent, Nelson, New Zealand, was sentenced to 18 years in prison at Hull Crown Court. On Thursday, 22 January 2026, Bayliss was jailed for a series of “vicious” non-recent child sex offences following a ten-day trial.

The investigation by Humberside Police began in February 2019 after a teenager came forward to another force to report that she had been subjected to a “vile” campaign of rape and abuse in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire. Detectives from the Protecting Vulnerable People Unit established that the “vicious” abuse began when the victim was just nine years old and continued over a prolonged period, involving rape, sexual assault, and physical and mental abuse.

Extradition and Diary Evidence

A “critical” breakthrough in the case occurred when detectives discovered a diary in which the victim had recorded the “abhorrent” details of her ordeal. The diary documented how Bayliss would “viciously” threaten her with violence, telling her that “no one would believe her” if she spoke out.

Bayliss had emigrated to New Zealand, where he “persistently” refused to acknowledge his crimes or return to the UK voluntarily. Following a “protracted” extradition process involving the New Zealand Police Force, Bayliss was eventually returned to Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, to face justice. He was remanded in custody until his trial commenced on 13 January 2026.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his “depraved” crimes in East Yorkshire, David Bayliss was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: 18 years in immediate custody.
  • Licence Period: An additional one-year requirement to be on licence upon his eventual release.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed for life.
  • SHPO: An indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order strictly prohibiting his future contact with minors.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Bayliss is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Humberside Police. His history of “systematic” abuse and his “vile” attempts to avoid prosecution by remaining abroad mean his status remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Bayliss must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address and travel. Humberside Police state that the “vigour” of the investigation and the cooperation of international partners ensured that this “heinous” predator was finally held to account. Any breach of his indefinite SHPO or registration conditions will result in his immediate return to Hull Crown Court.
