In 2024, the Offender Database reported that Dale Greaves, then 42, of Station Avenue, Ranskill, Nottinghamshire, was handed a suspended prison sentence for amassing a collection of “vile” child abuse material. Greaves appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court initially before being sentenced for three counts of possessing indecent images discovered on an iPhone seized by police on August 25, 2022.

The investigation by Nottinghamshire Police uncovered a “serious” digital library, including one Category A image—the most extreme and “vicious” classification—alongside 88 Category B images and six Category C images. The prosecution emphasised that the offences carried a significant starting point for sentencing due to the “vile” nature of the content recovered from the device.

“Dark Path” and Mitigation
During the proceedings, the court heard that Greaves had “callously” gone down what his defence described as a “dark path” following the breakdown of a relationship and the pressure of business. While Greaves admitted that what he had done was wrong, his representative emphasised that he was “realistic” about the prospect of a custodial sentence.

The judge reported that although Greaves had two previous convictions from two decades ago, there was no similar history of sexual offending on his record. His willingness to engage with the probation service and his efforts to address mental health issues were taken into account during the sentencing phase.

Suspended Sentence and Monitoring
On Tuesday, 22 October 2024, Greaves was sentenced to 34 weeks in prison, suspended for two years. As part of his “serious” rehabilitation requirements, he was ordered to complete an accredited sex offender programme. He was also ordered to pay a £187 surcharge and £85 in costs.

As a result of his conviction for possessing indecent images of children, Dale Greaves must sign the Sex Offenders Register for seven years. He is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Nottinghamshire Police, ensuring his digital behaviour and activities in Ranskill, Retford, and the wider Bassetlaw district are strictly monitored. Any breach of his suspended sentence or notification requirements will result in his immediate arrest and the activation of his 34-week jail term.
