In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Cristian Bogdan, then 42, was sentenced for his “vile” role in the “serious” production and possession of child abuse material. Bogdan, a cardio-thoracic surgeon at the Royal Stoke Hospital, pleaded guilty to multiple charges at Chester Crown Court.
The investigation, led by Cheshire Police’s Paedophile and Cyber Investigation Team, resulted in Bogdan’s arrest in December 2017. Officers discovered a vast collection of illegal material across multiple IT devices at his home. Despite his “respected” profession, the court heard that Bogdan was “viciously” and actively seeking out “dreadful” images of children being abused.
Scale of the Collection and Forensic Evidence
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reported a massive quantity of material recovered from Bogdan’s devices in Macclesfield:
- Still Pictures: 13,096 images depicting sexual child abuse.
- Videos: Two “vile” videos of abuse.
- Cartoons: 9,742 sexual child abuse cartoons.
Although Bogdan initially made no comment, he later provided a prepared statement admitting to downloading and viewing the images. Prosecutors reported that his claims of downloading the material “in bulk” were contradicted by evidence that he had “actively searched” for specific “serious” content over a prolonged period.
Sentence and Loss of Medical Status
For his “abhorrent” crimes in Cheshire, Cristian Bogdan, of London Road, Macclesfield, was:
- Sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years.
- Ordered to perform 120 hours of unpaid work.
- Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
- Subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for 10 years.
The GMC reported that Bogdan was struck off the medical register following his conviction, as his “behaviour” was incompatible with the standards expected of a medical professional. The court emphasised that he had risked a “respected” career in the pursuit of “vicious” criminal activity.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Bogdan is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Cheshire Police. His residency in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and his digital “behaviour” remain under “serious” scrutiny.
As a registered sex offender, Bogdan must comply with strict notification requirements. His SHPO prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with children and allows specialist officers to monitor his use of any internet-enabled device. Cheshire Police emphasise that no individual, regardless of their social standing or profession, is above the law when it comes to the “vile” exploitation of children.
