In 2025, the Offender Database reported that Christopher Goan, then 36, formerly of St Combs and now of Aberdeen, was sentenced at Peterhead Sheriff Court to a term of imprisonment for voyeurism. This followed a previous conviction in 2023 for possessing thousands of indecent images of children, which had resulted in his dismissal as a mathematics lecturer at Nescol.

The investigation established that, between February and August 2018, Goan used a tripod-mounted camera to secretly record his female neighbour as she dressed and undressed in an upstairs room. When confronted by the victim’s mother, Goan “evasively” claimed the device was merely a “sucker” for his children’s blackout blinds. Police later recovered 16 voyeurism videos with a total runtime of 18 minutes from a hard drive at his home.

Teacher Dismissal and Previous Offending

Goan was originally snared in late 2023 when he uploaded indecent images to an online platform. A raid on his home on 1 December 2023 uncovered:

  • Current Possession: 3,402 photographs and 45 videos of children.
  • Recovered Data: 2,383 deleted images and four videos.

Following these discoveries, Nescol suspended and then dismissed Goan in December 2023. At the time of his 2025 sentencing, Goan was already subject to a supervision order and participating in the Moving Forward 2 Change programme.

“Slap on the Wrist” Sentence and Impact

For his “predatory” behaviour in St Combs, Christopher Goan received the following from Sheriff Alan Sinclair:

  • Unpaid Work: 166 hours to be completed within one year.
  • Supervision: Remaining under his existing order until 2027.
  • Sex Offenders Register: His status on the register was maintained.

The victim branded the sentence a “slap on the wrist,” reporting that Goan showed no humility or shame in court, even reading a Kindle during the proceedings. She expressed significant fear for her children and disappointment that the court deemed him safe to remain in the community.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Goan is managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. His history as a former teacher who illicitly recorded neighbours and possessed thousands of child abuse images means his status remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a registered sex offender, Goan must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address and digital devices. Police Scotland states that they will continue to monitor his participation in rehabilitation programmes. Any breach of his supervision or registration conditions will result in his immediate return to Peterhead Sheriff Court, where a custodial sentence may be reconsidered.
