In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Carl Everall, then 28, of Haweswater Avenue, Crewe, Cheshire, was sentenced for the “reprehensible” sexual grooming of a teenage girl. On Thursday, 9 May 2019, the former youth football coach appeared at Chester Crown Court after admitting to engaging in sexual communication with a child.

The investigation established that Everall, who had been a coach with Crewe Alexandra FC’s academy since 2013, had messaged the girl on Snapchat over a nine-month period. Cheshire Constabulary reported that the messages became “steadily more concerning” and only ceased when Everall was arrested in September 2018. Despite having undergone extensive “serious” safeguarding training throughout his coaching career—which included a previous role at Port Vale FCEverall “dishonestly” utilised social media to target the victim.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

The court reported that Everall admitted his behaviour was “inappropriate” during police interviews and acknowledged that he “knew full well” the “serious” impact such conduct has on young people. Detective Constable Gail Burndred noted that the victim had shown “great maturity” in dealing with the “vile” situation. The judge noted that Everall’s position of trust within a professional football academy made the breach of safeguarding protocols particularly “reprehensible.”

The judge noted that while the offence was “serious,” the court imposed a three-year community order rather than immediate custody. The prosecution emphasised that the sentence included a mandatory sexual offender treatment programme to address his “vile” patterns of behaviour. For his crimes in Crewe, Cheshire, the court determined that Everall must be removed from the professional sports environment and subject to strict “serious” monitoring for a five-year period.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in England, Carl Everall was handed:

  • Community Order: A three-year community order.
  • Treatment: Mandatory sexual offender treatment programme.
  • Rehabilitation: A 35-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
  • SHPO: Subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were in effect for 5 years (now expired).
  • Conviction: Admitted one count of engaging in sexual communication with a child.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Everall was managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Cheshire Constabulary and the Probation Service. Due to the “serious” nature of his professional access to children at Crewe Alexandra, his management in Crewe was subject to oversight by the Public Protection Unit.

Authorities in Cheshire state that while Everall’s initial five-year registration on the Sex Offenders Register concluded in 2024, he remains subject to the conditions of his SHPO and is permanently barred from working in football or any role involving children via the DBS Barring List. The case remains a “serious” warning regarding the necessity for “reprehensible” vigilance within youth sports. Any further “vile” behaviour or attempts to re-enter coaching in Crewe or elsewhere would result in immediate investigation and potential return to Chester Crown Court.
