In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Bryan Calam, then 71, of Wood View, Swanland, East Yorkshire, was convicted of eight counts of sexual abuse against a schoolgirl. Calam, a retired Humberside Police inspector who had worked in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and regional crime units, was found guilty at Hull Crown Court. The vile and predatory offences occurred approximately 15 years prior to the trial, involving the systematic grooming and exploitation of an underage victim.

The court heard that Bryan Calam used his position of authority to take advantage of the girl, with allegations suggesting he had sex with her 20 to 30 times, though he was not charged with those specific acts for legal reasons. Throughout the trial, the callous retired officer dismissed the victim’s horrific accounts as “rubbish” and labelled her “vindictive.” However, the jury took less than five hours to reject his deplorable defence and find him guilty of five offences of indecent assault and three of indecency with a child.

During sentencing in March 2019, Judge Paul Watson QC described Calam as a “predatory and manipulative” individual who had lived a double life while serving as a high-ranking officer. The judge noted that the horrendous breach of trust had left the victim with serious lifelong psychological scars. Despite his age and previous standing in Humberside Police, the court ruled that his vile conduct necessitated an immediate and significant custodial sentence to reflect the gravity of the abuse in Swanland, East Yorkshire.

As a result of his convictions for these serious sexual crimes, Bryan Calam was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison. He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). He is managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Humberside Police, the very force he once served, and remains under intensive supervision for the duration of his life. Any breach of his strict registration requirements in Swanland or elsewhere will result in his immediate arrest and detention.
