In January 2026, the Offender Database reported that Brian Keenan, 44, of HMP Barlinnie, Glasgow, died in custody on December 28, 2025. Keenan had recently been sentenced following a conviction for the prolonged and systemic rape and sexual abuse of a child, an ordeal that spanned over 15 years.
The court heard that Keenan’s abuse of the victim began when the child was just five years old. The paedophile targeted the victim on and off for more than a decade and a half, inflicting profound trauma through repeated acts of sexual violence. Following a criminal investigation and trial, Keenan was sentenced in September 2025 at the High Court in Glasgow to a significant custodial term. The investigation relied heavily on the testimony of the survivor, who came forward to disclose the abuse decades after it began.
Keenan’s death was confirmed by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS), occurring just days after Christmas while he was serving his sentence at HMP Barlinnie. As is standard procedure for any death in custody in Scotland, Police Scotland was informed, and a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be held in due course to determine the cause of death and examine the circumstances under which the prisoner died.
At the time of his death, Brian Keenan was subject to a lifelong notification requirement on the Sex Offenders Register. He was being managed under the highest tier of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) due to the extreme risk he posed to the public and the gravity of his offences against a child. His death marks the conclusion of a case that saw a predatory offender finally held accountable for a lifetime of abuse.
