In January 2026, the Offender Database reported that Arthur Warwick, then 67, a notorious serial paedophile and “sexual predator,” died in custody at HMP Frankland on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. Warwick was serving a life sentence at the high-security Category A facility in County Durham following his conviction for a “catalogue of horrific” sexual crimes against children.

Warwick, formerly of Roundthorn, Penrith, was 58 years old when he was jailed at Carlisle Crown Court in 2016. He had admitted to 29 counts of child sexual abuse involving four victims. His crimes, which the judge described as “predatory and manipulative,” included five rapes of children as young as nine and a series of grave sexual assaults. In one instance, Warwick chillingly told a victim he would only stop the abuse if the child found another boy to take his place. His offending remained undetected for years until he was snared by a Cumbria Police undercover sting operation.

Warwick was arrested in Whitehaven after travelling there to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old boy he had groomed online; the contact was actually a specialist undercover officer. A subsequent search of his Penrith home uncovered a massive stash of indecent images on his computer, approximately a third of which were classified as Category A—the most severe level of child abuse material. The sentencing judge in 2016 handed down a life sentence with a minimum term of 13 years, stating that Warwick posed an extreme and ongoing danger to children.

Following his death on December 25, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) confirmed on January 7, 2026, that an investigation into the circumstances of his death is officially in progress. While the specific cause of death has not been released, it is standard procedure for the PPO to investigate all deaths in custody to ensure proper care was provided and to identify any security or medical failings within the high-security estate.

Prior to his death, Warwick was a registered sex offender for life and was managed under the highest level of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA). His name was also placed on the DBS Barred List, ensuring he could never again hold a position of trust. His death marks the end of his incarceration at HMP Frankland, one of the UK’s most secure prisons, which houses some of the country’s most dangerous sexual and violent offenders.
