In 2012, the Offender Database recorded that Antoni Imiela, then 57, was jailed for 12 years for a historical rape committed on Christmas Day 1987 in Forest Hill, South East London. On Thursday, 22 March 2012, Imiela appeared at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court) for sentencing. The court reported that the defendant, already infamous as the “M25 Rapist,” attacked a 29-year-old mother-of-two near her home after she left a pub.

The investigation established that Imiela grabbed the victim, threatened to kill her, and repeatedly punched her while holding a brick inches from her face. The victim’s husband was only two metres away during the attack, but she was unable to scream as Imiela held his hand over her mouth. Although the victim died in 2006, the Metropolitan Police were able to charge Imiela 23 years later after DNA samples from the crime scene were upgraded in 2009 using modern forensic techniques, providing a direct match to the defendant.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

The court reported that Imiela expressed “not one jot of remorse” for the attack, which had blighted the victim’s life with mental illness from 1990 until her death. The Old Bailey heard that Imiela was a “wholly unrepentant” predator with a history involving guns and extreme violence. Judge John Bevan QC noted that the defendant seemed to have a “dislike of humanity in general” and remained as dangerous as he was when first jailed in 2004 for a series of seven sex attacks, including the rape of a 10-year-old girl.

The judge noted that the absence of the primary witness did not prevent justice, as the Crown Prosecution Service successfully applied to have the victim’s original statement read to the jury. For his actions in Forest Hill, London, Imiela was found guilty of rape, indecent assault, and serious sexual assault. The prosecution reported that detectives believe it is “likely” Imiela carried out further unknown attacks on women in the late 1980s and between 1996 and 2002.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in England, Antoni Imiela was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: 12 years in prison (to be served after his existing life sentence).
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements are in effect for life.
  • Judicial Oversight: Sentenced at the Old Bailey following a jury trial and DNA conviction.
  • Criminal Status: Already serving a life sentence (imposed 2004) for the M25 rapes.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Imiela is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by the Metropolitan Police and the prison estate. Due to the “extreme” danger he poses as a serial predator and his history of attacks across London and the South East, his management is subject to the highest level of oversight by the Public Protection Unit.

As a member of the Sex Offenders Register, Imiela remains under lifelong notification requirements. Authorities state that he is considered one of the most dangerous sexual offenders in the United Kingdom, necessitating permanent incarceration under his life sentence. Any further identification of historical victims through DNA or witness testimony will result in additional investigations by the Metropolitan Police Cold Case Team and further hearings at the Old Bailey.
