In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Angus McDonald, then 63, of Damacre Road, Brechin, was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Dundee Sheriff Court. In 2021, McDonald pleaded guilty to a string of non-recent sexual attacks on a boy over a six-year period between 1977 and 1983 in Forfar.

The investigation established that McDonald, whom the victim referred to as “Uncle Gus,” was a friend of the child’s father. He used this position of trust to abuse the boy, beginning when the victim was 10 years old. The court heard that the abuse often occurred when McDonald stayed overnight after consuming alcohol, ignoring the child’s pleas to stop.

Criminal Record and Admissions

McDonald has a history of sexual offending, including:

  • 1997: Convicted of child sex offences and sentenced to three months in prison.
  • 2004: Received a community payback order for breaching sex offender registration terms.
  • 2007: Given a probation order for sending indecent messages to a young male.

When questioned by police in August 2019, McDonald admitted his motivations, stating, “Because I’m a paedophile.” However, he later attempted to minimise his actions to social workers by claiming the child “made the first move.” Sheriff Alastair Carmichael rejected these claims, noting that McDonald was the adult in the situation and had caused a long-lasting, detrimental impact.

Chance Sighting and Reporting

The offences came to light after the victim, now an adult, had a chance encounter with McDonald in the local area. This sighting triggered “unpleasant memories,” prompting him to report the matter to Police Scotland. The prosecutor reported that the abuse had ceased when the victim entered a relationship at age 15, after which contact with McDonald gradually ended.

Sentence and Registration Requirements

For his “vile” actions in Angus, Angus McDonald was:

  • Sentenced to 20 months in prison.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.

The Sheriff ruled that a custodial sentence was the only alternative to reflect society’s disapproval and provide adequate punishment for the “horrendous” record of the offender.

Monitoring and Public Protection

McDonald is managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. His status as a repeat offender remains under scrutiny.

As a registered sex offender until 2031, McDonald must comply with strict notification requirements. Police Scotland states that they will continue to support survivors of non-recent abuse and ensure that predators are held accountable, regardless of how much time has passed. Any breach of his registration conditions will result in his immediate return to Dundee Sheriff Court.
