In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Alexander Johnston, then 78, of Longmeadow Road, Cornwall, was sentenced to 51 weeks in prison at Cambridge Crown Court. Johnston pleaded guilty to the possession of indecent images of a child on the first day of his scheduled trial.

The investigation by the Hertfordshire Constabulary Non-Recent Child Abuse Investigation Team established that the offences occurred between 1976 and 1979. At the time, Johnston was employed as a teacher at Bishop’s Stortford College, which operated boarding facilities. Johnston used his position to target a victim, whom he often plied with alcohol.

“Forensic Breakthrough” and Legislation

The court reported that Johnston had created the indecent images during the late 1970s and kept them for over 50 years. Under the legislation in place at the time of the original incidents, Johnston could not be convicted of creating the images; however, his continued possession of them decades later enabled officers to bring him to justice.

Detective Constable Jess Berg commended the victim for showing “incredible bravery” in coming forward to speak of experiences that occurred half a century ago. She stated that Johnston was a dangerous predator who exploited a position of power for sexual gratification.

Sentence and Registration Requirements

For his crimes at Bishop’s Stortford College, Alexander Johnston was:

  • Sentenced to 51 weeks in prison.
  • Placed on the Sexual Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

The judge at Cambridge Crown Court handed down the sentence on Friday, 9 January 2026. Hertfordshire Constabulary thanked the college for its cooperation throughout the lengthy investigation.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Johnston is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Hertfordshire Constabulary and Devon and Cornwall Police. His status and his residency in Cornwall remain under scrutiny to ensure public safety.

As a member of the Sexual Offenders’ Register for 10 years, Johnston must comply with notification requirements regarding his address and travel. Hertfordshire Constabulary states that it does not matter how much time has passed; they will investigate all reports of sexual offences. Any breach of his registration conditions will result in a return to court.
