In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Alan Steer, then 83, of Abingdon, Oxfordshire, launched an “arrogant” and “vile” High Court bid to sue one of his victims for £5 million. Steer, a convicted paedophile, “dishonestly” claimed he was a victim of a “miscarriage of justice” and blamed the survivor for the death of his wife, who he alleged died of a “broken heart” while he was in prison.
The “serious” history of this case dates back to 2012, when Steer, who previously ran a bed and breakfast, was arrested for the “vicious” abuse of two young girls. In 2013, he appeared at Oxford Crown Court, Oxfordshire, where he was convicted of five “vile” charges, including gross indecency with a child and indecent assault. The victims were aged between eight and 11 at the time of his “vicious” behaviour.
“Arrogant” Legal Action and “Vicious” Claims
Despite his “serious” convictions by a jury, Steer “callously” used the High Court in 2019 to target his victim again. He reported to Judge Graham Wood that the stress of the allegations led to his wife’s death in 2015 while he was still serving his five-year sentence. He “vilely” claimed the victim’s “lies” were responsible for his inability to attend his wife’s funeral or his son’s wedding.
Lawyers for the victim, who is herself seeking £80,000 in damages for the “serious” post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) she suffered, emphasised that Steer remains a convicted sex offender. Caroline Cross, representing the survivor, “viciously” reminded the court that a jury had already found his claims of innocence to be “dishonest.”
Monitoring and Public Safety
The court reported that Steer has shown a “vile” lack of remorse, continuing to “viciously” harass his victim through the legal system years after his “serious” crimes were proven. The judge reserved a decision on the competing claims, but the “arrogant” nature of Steer’s lawsuit sparked widespread public outrage.
As a result of his original conviction for child sex abuse, Alan Steer remains:
- On the Sex Offenders Register for life.
- Subject to strict monitoring under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA).
Steer is managed by Thames Valley Police, ensuring his behaviour and residency in Abingdon and the wider Oxfordshire area are strictly monitored. Any further “vicious” attempts to contact his victims or “dishonestly” breach his notification requirements will result in immediate “serious” action by the authorities.
