In 2023, William James, aka Stephen Umney, the Bedfordshire Paedophile, who sexually assaulted patients at a Bedfordshire care facility for individuals with mental health disorders, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
William James, 40, previously identified as Stephen Umney, had perpetrated abuse against three residents over a decade-long span.
William James, who is homeless, was charged with 17 counts of engaging in sexual behaviour with or in the presence of an individual with a mental condition.
He received a life sentence with a minimum duration of eight years and four months.
In November 2021, Northamptonshire Police discovered the offences after an examination of his computer, which was part of an investigation into indecent photographs of children.
William James recorded himself perpetrating abuse in the care facility where he was employed as a support worker.
Bedfordshire Police subsequently initiated a second inquiry into the maltreatment at the care facility.
In May at Luton Crown Court, William James was convicted of five counts of engaging in sexual conduct with an individual possessing a mental disease and nine counts of inducing a person with a mental condition to participate in sexual activity.
He was additionally convicted of three charges of participating in sexual behaviour in the presence of an individual with a mental condition.
William James was acquitted of three charges of mistreating an individual lacking capacity.
Detective Constable Claire Long of Bedfordshire Police described it as “a horrific case.”
“This case involved an extensive and intricate investigation, exemplifying our dedication to addressing offenders and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals,” she added.
