In 2017, the Offender Database reported that Philip Pryor, then 65, of Llys-y-Llyfrgell, Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court.
Philip Pryor was jailed for two and a half years after admitting to three counts of indecent assault on a male and one count of possessing indecent images. The court heard that Philip Pryor, a former soldier and accomplished musician, used his influential position as a band leader for an Army cadet unit in Burry Port to groom and sexually abuse a teenage boy.
The prosecution detailed how Philip Pryor manipulated his young victim by providing alcohol and cigarettes, eventually subjecting the boy to sexual assaults in a band hut kitchen and a shower. In a calculated effort to ensure silence, Philip Pryor told the victim that no one would believe his accusations because his abuser was such a respected and prominent member of the local community.
The abuse remained hidden for years until the victim, inspired by media coverage regarding the mistreatment of young football players, gained the courage to contact the NSPCC and the police. During the subsequent investigation, police seized a computer Philip Pryor used in his role as a branch secretary for the British Legion, discovering three indecent images of children and evidence of searches for child abuse material.
Philip Pryor was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life and was made subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. The judge noted that Philip Pryor had significantly breached the trust placed in him as a mentor and community leader, using his military background and musical talent to gain access to vulnerable youngsters.
