Mark Cain, the Newport Paedophile, a sexual predator who executed a “campaign” of no fewer than 22 rapes against a youngster under the age of 13, exclaimed “it’s bullsh×t” from the dock while receiving a 23-year enhanced term as a dangerous offender.
A court characterised Mark Cain’s sexual offences against the youngster as the “calculating actions of a predatory man”. It asserted that a prolonged sentence was essential to safeguard the public from the threat he represented.
Cardiff Crown Court was informed that Mark Cain conducted a “campaign” of rape on his primary school-aged victim and compelled the child to view pornographic periodicals and DVDs.
The abuse, occurring in the Vale of Glamorgan over an extended duration, was not reported initially but was revealed years later when the complainant disclosed it after a routine medical check.
Warehouse worker Mark Cain was apprehended and, throughout the interview, refuted the claims. A jury later convicted him.
In a statement from the victim, which was read to the court by prosecution barrister Matthew Cobbe, the complainant said for many years he had pushed what happened to him to the back of his mind, but said he always felt like people “could see through me”.
He said there was a “hole in the person” he was as an adult because of what the defendant did to him, and he said he felt Mark Cain’s abuse had “taken some masculinity” away from him.
He added that he felt proud of himself for reporting the abuse and taking the case to court, and that the legal process had given him a “healthier mindset”.
Mark Anthony Cain, 38, currently residing on Morden Road, Newport, had previously been convicted at trial of four counts of raping a child under 13, encompassing a minimum of 22 distinct rapes, and for forcing a child to observe a sexual act when he returned to the dock for sentencing.
He possesses eight prior convictions for 22 offences, including the indecent assault of a girl, sexual assault of a woman—an incident involving the groping of a female shop employee—and robbery.
Judge Celia Hughes stated that the defendant had “systematically abused and demeaned [the victim] at your discretion,” characterising his conduct as “the deliberate actions of a predatory individual.”
The court expressed her satisfaction, based on the information she had seen, that Mark Cain constituted a dangerous offender in both legal and common interpretations, necessitating a lengthy term to safeguard the public from him.
The defendant vociferously denounced the allegations from the dock, characterising the case against him as “nonsense”.
Mark Cain received a 23-year enhanced sentence, consisting of 20 years in custody and a subsequent three-year licence period.
The offender is required to serve two-thirds of the prison portion of the sentence before being eligible to apply for release; however, the Parole Board will assess their suitability for release.
Mark Cain will be a registered sex offender for life and is subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order to regulate his access to children.
