Eight years have been given to a double rapist who changed gender before trial. Transgender Paedophile Isla Bryson, aka Adam Graham, was incarcerated for various sexual offences.
Between 2016 and 2019, Isla Bryson, sometimes known as Adam Graham, attacked two women in Glasgow and Clydebank.
Bryson was judged to be highly likely to re-offend and would be under three-year monitoring upon release.
The case sparked a fierce argument on whether Bryson, a man turned woman, ought to be housed in a male or female prison.
After being remanded to a women’s jail following a conviction, Isla Bryson, 31, was moved to a men’s prison.
About what precisely are the row of transgender inmates debating?
Is male or female double rapist Isla Bryson?
Officials of prisons defend transferring a rapist to a women’s prison.
This raised questions about the security of any female inmates housed with a transgender sex offender in a female prison.
The case resulted in an urgent assessment and policy modification whereby all newly convicted or detained transgender offenders were kept in jails depending on their biological sex.
According to the trial, Isla Bryson, from Clydebank, targeted internet-vulnerable women. Lord Scott said to Bryson while passing sentence: “You see yourself as the victim in this case.” You are not, though.
The judge said that reports showed Isla Bryson possessed several neurodevelopmental problems.
“Your vulnerability is no excuse at all for what you did to these two women in 2016 and 2019,” he said.
Adam Graham – Transgression of Rape
“Despite your vulnerability, in a period just under three years, you sexually assaulted two women who could both be considered vulnerable.”
According to Lord Scott, Bryson raped victims in their homes and preyed on their helplessness.
He also said that the rapist, who keeps denying having committed the offences, would be added to the sex offenders register for lifetime.
Isla Bryson’s estranged wife, Shonna Graham, feels the victims should take the front stage.
“Based on what I know, he is a male who committed the crime in line with his gender. He should spend the term in a man’s jail, she continued.
Ms Graham said she met Adam Bryson in 2015 and married the following year.
The 31-year-old stated there was never any sign in their marriage that her husband wanted to be a woman. She claimed that although Isla Bryson had intended to serve his term in a women’s prison to simplify matters, this had not turned out as planned.
“A man cannot commit a crime and then try to transition following prosecution. That’s how you know it’s all a massive joke with him.
While they were together, Isla Bryson tried to rape and stab Ms Graham.
She was further offended as she heard Adam Bryson had changed his name to Adam Graham.
“He used my last name to hide from his crimes, the way I see it,” she said. “I hope he rotates through jail.
I hope the victims can put this horrible person behind them.
Defence lawyer Edward Targowski KC said in court that Bryson had told “ill-judged, ill-informed, and ignorant” remarks regarding his intended gender change.
Mr Targowski said his client was on the NHS waiting list for a gender reassignment operation, had chosen to change gender many years ago, and had taken “maximum” doses of medication.
After a review of the case ordered by Justice Secretary Keith Brown, its basic conclusions were made public earlier this month, but since the whole report included personal information, it was not made public.
While the offender was in route, it came to light that the Scottish Prison Service had opted to send Bryson to Cornton Vale women’s jail in Stirling instead of the original HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow.
Two days later, top management sent the offender to a male jail, HMP Edinburgh, “due to the level of risk and remaining uncertainties. “Eight years have been sentenced for a double rapist who changed gender before trial.
