A Sex Offender from Penrith, Gatis Ugriks, has been placed on the Sex Offender Register following his conviction for deliberately exposing himself to a delivery woman.
Gatis Ugriks, 42, refuted the allegation on September 4 of the previous year, asserting that he answered the door in a state of undress due to having just emerged from the shower. However, he was found guilty following a trial.
Prosecutor George Shelley encapsulated the evidence.
The individual stated that the woman who became the victim was delivering to the defendant’s residence at Langton Court, where Ugriks opened the door, first presenting as amicable and engaging in conversation.
During this, he asked the woman if she was busy, to which she replied that she was. Gatis Ugriks responded, said the prosecutor, by saying: “That’s a shame as we could have played together.”
It was at this stage, he opened the door fully open, and she realised the defendant was completely naked and touching his privates and masturbating.
The woman had immediately left, feeling scared.
In a victim statement, the woman said she had been disgusted by Gatis Ugriks’ behaviour.
She wrote: “This incident has made me feel so shocked and violated. At the time, I felt scared because of the location in which it happened.”
The area was away from public view, and she had to walk through an alley before she could be back in a public place. After returning to work, she felt anxious about knocking on doors, fearing something similar could happen again.
She added: “I never want to see this male again; I think it’s going to affect me for some time.”
The defendant, who was not legally represented in court, said he expects he will now lose his job as a result of the conviction.
Magistrates said they were aware that the offence happened in an isolated location, which made it more serious.
They imposed an 18-month community order, which will include 20 rehabilitation activity days and 300 hours of unpaid work. Gatis Ugriks must also pay the victim £500 in compensation.
He must also pay £300 costs – half of what was claimed by the Crown Prosecution Service – and a £114 victim surcharge.
Gatis Ugriks will be on the Sex Offender Register for five years. This will involve him providing his personal details to the police within three days and having to notify the police in advance if he plans to travel abroad.
